Lampela X Eskola 10″ EP (RT040) / 2011
A recent sense of delight is the release of the Lampela X Eskola 10″ vinyl EP. The release features tracks from the acclaimed Lampela X Eskola full lenght album, plus an unreleased cut in ‘Easy Up and Over’ (which cooks, boy!). The project is a collaborative effort of composer Jussi Lampela and trumpet man Jukka Eskola, featuring a canny nonet to say the least (see below).
So writes Finnish jazz great and pianist on the session, Jukkis Uotila, on the liner notes:
“Plenty of improvised highlights here, definitely check out how altoist Ari Jokelainen shones in ‘Afternoon in Central Park’, and how trombonist Antti Rissanen challenges Jukka Eskola’s trumpet in ‘Easy Up and Over’ with some serious brass solo trading. The bassist Ville Herrala gets some in ‘Together We Went’ and my man Jussi Lehtonen on drums burns energetically all the way and keeps the piano player in line. And incredibly throughout the whole process Mr. Lampela, Direttore d’orchestra, was able to stay cool and patient and made sure we all sounded decent. Great music, Jussi! A real pleasure!”
We agree.
